Correct! Our security procedures revealed that HE/SHE was in fact a spammer so the account was deleted and the IP Address blocked.

The way BM explained it was the new software would block spammers etc. He also pointed out, on a previous member joining, that board approval was a further stage of entry into the site.

I therefore assume that the new software did not stop the spammer only to be followed by human input of board approval to allow them to take the next step to get on the site.

At what stage did it go wrong?

I think we are all aware that there are people in the internet community with nothing better to do than devote their energies and time to getting past any software designed to keep them out. They do it just to prove they can. Major companies, banks and governments across the world have teams devoted to stopping them but it has always been a game of catch up and probably always will be. Whatever software we can use will always be reactive rather than proactive as the designers of protective software are chasing rainbows. Fast as they detect and block something someone, somewhere, will find a way round it. BM and I have never claimed to be software designers, we simply use whatever we can find. We work as a team with each checking potential newbies. Some are genuine people who simply join and never post. Others are spammers, bot users, spiders et al. We can only do our best. The case in point was one that looked okay but further digging (because it was a strange name) revealed that someone using that name, which may or may not have been computer generated, had opened accounts with a number of forums across the world between the 15th and 18th of January this year..... That was enough to cause us to review the decision to admit them and after discussion we deleted the account. I hope that satisfies the conspiracy theorists among you.

Kerist on a Bike! You lot are making me sound like "Other Steve".
