exactly. If you refuse to pay her do you think she will deliberately fail her exams out of spite? Don't promise anything, hopefully she will want to do well anyway.

she can hardly hold you to ransom can she. What is she going to do? refuse to do well if you dont pay her? stick to your guns Miss D. Like Growler said, if she works hard treat her for that after the exams.
