No no no no. FIFTY SEVEN is a damned sight easier to say in one breath than ONE HUNDRED AND, yes another werd....AND FIFTY SEVEN, in'it?
FIFTY SEVEN just comes within the standard GROWLER number pronouncing tolerances, OK? whistle:

No, you have lost the plot... ::)

The point the OP was making was that we DO pronounce the whole number (fifty seven) when five seven would be simpler.

Yet on big numbers we say one five seven instead of one hundred and fifty seven - which is logical.

Or have I missed the point of the OP? Shrugs:

That is my point

Thank you Miss D - your point was quite clear....  Thumbs:

i think the furry oaf is being deliberately obtuse today... ::)

Around here one bus is referred to as a two eighty.

Rest are called by their 3 number bit such as two one three.

There again I use the X26 to go to work.

why when a number such as 102 do we pronounce the 0 as oh? It is a number not a letter.

Oh Gawd Misty ..... You really have now thrown a spanner into the works.  noooo:

On a related subject: Why do people call it a "slash" when it is in fact an oblique?
My kids are forever doing this as in "and/or" which comes out as "and slash or".
Or when phoning in response to a letter I am asked for the reference number I say "Six, Two, Oblique, Three, Five, Seven" and the dozy bint at the other end says " You Whaaaat?"  Banghead
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

No Dear ..... Only some people call taking a p*ss "having a slash."  You are clearly mixing with the wrong sort.
