Perhaps I'm being overly cynical (quelle surprise) but a few things spring out:-

Her mother "Hayley  Cawley" kicked the "fox" and it fled 

The "fox" got in through a "broken back door".

Now, perhaps it's just me, a broken door means perhaps a dodgy lock at worst. If worse, you'd block & wedge it with something to STOP anything getting in. How broken was this door?

WHAT sort of "mother" would possibly allow the backdoor to be so insecure as to allow a fox in? If that was impossible to shore up, WHAT sort of "mother" would then leave the child in an adjacent room?
