What's Gatwick gonna do?
[/serious mode] Like most runways in the south, the aspect is 080/260 which is pretty roughly the angle the winds tend to come from, so in terms of planes taking off/landing it's not really a problem as there will be little in the way of cross winds. The bigger problem, however, comes from the structures - the airbridges to the planes will be moving about in strong winds as will the fuselages of the planes and this can cause damage to plane and airbridge. Only because of that will the airport be shut. The planes can land, but you cannot get the passengers off safely. [/serious mode off]
