The UK is not a shit hole. It has dodgy areas yes esp in NI where catholics and protestants are still bombing and killing each other in rather worrying numbers despite CHL believing that's ended.

A pace where you can get off a train and (apart from the red buses) not know you are in the country of your birth because 100% of the local population are foreigners...
As someone who does not return very often ...I was amazed at the change when I went back 3 years ago ...I did not recognise the UK I knew .....
It was actually quite sad...
I have only been back 4 times in 14 years and maybe it is easier to see .....but I was seriously shocked .....

On a serious note ..I considered going back (UK) about 18 months ago.....both my father and my best friend both said do not.......
Before the jokes.. they both said after the length of time I have been away ,,it would be nearly impossible to re-settle ..
