Substitutes are as available at point of knockout of your current team and teams are deemed knocked out as soon as it is impossible for them to proceed to the final. If two teams are knocked out at the 'same time' then the timing as determined by the BBC live text feed will determine who was first and has first claim on any substitutes. In the unlikely but soddingly annoyingly circumstance of two teams absolutely being knocked out at the same time then the magic coin toss will be used.
FWIW the quarterfinals turn out to be the last round where substitute teams get in, but it may of course be earlier, we'll see.
