Parliament Square Statues
« on: August 29, 2007, 08:51:52 AM »
I see that a debate has started "elsewhere" about the unveiling of a statue of Nelson Mandella in Parliament Square today. The argument put forward is that he is not "British" and should therefore not be there. The suggestion is that his statue is there because he is "Black"

I am not allowed to post a reply there but if any of you with dual membership wish to join in you might care to point out that Jan Christian Smuts and Abraham Lincoln were not British either. Both have statues in Parliament Square, which has never been reserved for British leaders but is the recognised preserve of Great Leaders of Nations.

To be fair Dippy, in his response, seems to have grasped the point that one doesn't have to be British.

In truth the reason that Mandella's Statue is going into Parliament Square is because the City Of Westminster refused planning consent for Ken Livingstone's plan to put it in Trafalgar Square.

I didn't know that.

They're probably read your post here anyway.

Also ~ it would have to be for great and good leaders otherwise we could argue the case for a having a statue of Hitler  eeek:

Get outta here!  I hear we have sunk so low that we are over the horizon...  It would be sooo uncool to read our stuff,
or at least admit to it.

Hey! why don't we put Uncle Bob Magabwe up too? - They can chat about the old days.

noooo: You have to be joking...He closed down all 4 of my accounts pdq, at the same time as he shut you down. He will not sanction the new one I tried to set up... I have earned the reputation of a trouble maker... which actually annoys me, when I see some of the tripe that the new and some of the old clientele are posting there now, not that I look in very often these days, I have taken my own advice and found a life.   whistle:
