Well check out my links then!

I bought a virtually new Golf for £4000 from an auction. 9000 on the clock. On the forecourts (new) at £11000, and that was years ago.

1. Don't but new
2. Don't buy second hand from dealers

Thats all well and good IF you know and are fully aware of what the pitfalls are, AND you know a bit about mowtas. You can strike it lucky, but you can come horribly unstuck at an auction.
The golden rule at auctions, is to ONLY buy a car that has come from a main stealer. If it doesn't say this on the description sheet normally stuck in the windscreen, walk away from it no matter how 'pretty' it looks.

How big a car do you want Wench?
Small medium or large? Hatchback, booted, estate, cabrolet, coupe, MPV, 4wd,Gti, diesel or petrol?

Take into consideration that WHEN Mr W passes his test, insurance must be taken into great consideration as he won't have any NCD. It will be expensive initially, but not as bad as a 17 yr old would pay.

I used a hired Fiat Uno once ~had it for a week. Mrs S and I were impressed. Covered hundreds of miles at motorway speeds on a thimble full of go-juice. Mind that was in Holland and a skateboard would get you across the country in an afternoon.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Fiat Panda

My thoughts too tbh. Crackin car, and well respected in the trade. Fiats are 100% better than they were even 5 years ago.

Hyundai Getz with the balance of the 5 year manufactureres warranty worthy of a sniffin', and I think Kia are offering a 7 year warranty on their range now too. Picanto is quite sweet albeit a bit of an ugly face.

New Fiat 500 coming out in 2 months, beautiful but expensive for what it is, + join the waiting list.

Have a very close look at the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo.
They are all made in the same factory which is a Toyota factory. Build quality is very good. Driven the C1 and was suprised just how good it was. The 3 cylinder1.0 litre engine is a gem and suprisingly perky, with phenominal economy....60mpg easily obtainable around town. Don't waste time looking at the diesel version. Little benefit for the extra 1000 quid.
Miniscual boot though, so transporting all your 'tat' around could be a problem if that's a requirement...back seat folds down in one piece on the cheaper model, but in two halves on the 'posh' one to give you loads of extra tat moving space. ;)

I'd say the C1, Panda, Picanto, Getz, or the Toyota Yaris. All obtainable new or fairly new for less than 7 grand.
C1 attracts the cheapest insurance i think. Group 1, and shop around well hard for that too. ;)

DON'T get sucked into the BMW Mini range trend setting tripe. Horrendous second hand prices, upwards of 6+k for an early one even, and many have been abused. New prices are just a bloody joke! happy001
Up to 23k!!!!!!! Give me strength. eeek:
DON'T do it, (buy new) no matter how big the temptation to be 'trendy' ::)

"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Well, someone had to say it!

Yes, I've heard all the jokes Snoopy.  lol:

It was my grandfather-in-law's, we inherited when he kicked the bucket. It had a dodgy head gasket which cause the radiator to overheat fairly regularly (disgraced itself in Reading town centre and driving over the south downs) and the gear box was wrecked. We replaced it with one of those new-fangled Felicias in due course, the garage "did us a favour" by not charging us to scrap it.

That's as may be, but they did in fact win their class on the RAC rally for many many years from the mid 70's to the early 90's IIRC, due to staggering reliability and being so robust, and also having the ability to get through mud ice and snow where other cars failed. Engine at the back over the driven wheels was the main reason for that, so don't knock them. noooo:

If I hadn't some other bugger would have ~ anyway a third class ride beats a first class walk any day.
