NZ Day 34

Arrowtown to Dunedin

Beautiful crisp sunrise at Arrowtown and off to Dunedin stopping off at Cromwell and a few other historic places on the way…

Checked into hotel and then headed off to the beautiful Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel for dinner...
  great scenery again

That DILLIGAF bicycle creation brought back a few 'koff memories

And they're putting far too many growth additives into their apple and pear farming

I had to explain DILLIGAF to everybody... ::)

NZ Day 35

Dunedin

Beautiful weather again!

Early start and off across the bay to the beautifully restored Larnach Castle.

Then off to explore the middle of Dunedin, St. Paul’s Cathedral and then lunch. After lunch a quick (!) walk up Baldwin Street which is the world’s steepest residential street! Exhausting!

Lastly off to Dunedin Railway station which is surprisingly beautiful – they knew how to build them in those days!

Out to dinner tonight and then fly back to Auckland tomorrow…

What is the gradient of the street ? Gotta wonder why people wanna live on it if it is so inhospitable !!

Quote from: Mr. Google
A short straight street a little under 350 metres (1,150 ft) long, Baldwin Street runs east from the valley of the Lindsay Creek up the side of Signal Hill towards Opoho, rising from 30 m (98 ft) above sea level at its junction with North Road to 100 m (330 ft) above sea level at the top, an average slope of slightly more than 1:5. Its lower reaches are only moderately steep, and the surface is asphalt, but the upper reaches of this cul-de-sac are far steeper and surfaced in concrete (200 m or 660 ft long) for ease of maintenance (bitumen—in either chip seal or asphalt—would flow down the slope on a warm day) and for safety in Dunedin's frosty winters.

The 161.2-metre-long (529 ft) top section climbs 47.2 metres (155 ft) vertically, an average gradient of 1:3.41. At its maximum, about 70 metres (230 ft) from the top, the slope of Baldwin Street is about 1:2.86 (19° or 35%). That is, for every 2.86 metres travelled horizontally, the elevation changes by 1 metre.

Any story behind the guns?

That Burns statue was a bit of a tenuous link to the town.  Maybe I should put up a statue to Burns because I once burnt myself
Well, whatever, nevermind

The guns belonged to W.J.M. Larnach who built the place (using money from his Mrs.). He was a bit of a hunter/shooter/fisher and heavily into cock fighting too (even though it was illegal at the time).  He killed himself.

Well, Dunedin comes from Důn Čideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh so there is a bit more relevance link than you might think...

How many days left?

Not many...  sad24:

We fly Dunedin to Auckland today (although the airport is so far out of the city the wrong way we may as well have driven to Christchirch)...

...then we fly out of Auckland Saturday evening, 17 hours direct to Dubai, two hours layover and fly to Larnaca Sunday.

All good things have to come to an end.  But look on the bright side, you'll miss Eurovision

Up early and off to The Otago Settlers Museum. Then a quick trip around the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, off to the (tiny) Dunedin airport and a short flight back to Auckland...
