Looks like the insurance company will have to request the records direct rom quack with a copy o the Greek death certificate

We also realised her car (keys in Crete) is parked somewhere at Brummagem Airport

Can her son not take his birth certificate  / passport to the doc to verify ID ?

Who applies for the Death certificate in Greece  - can her son do that from here or will he struggle with all the red tape too.

He must be in bits himself - let alone having to deal with the bureaucracy of it all

Birth certificate might link him to her but only under one of her previous names. Dunno about the Death Certificate.

But I bet someone has at some time conned an insurance company and/or doctor before.  And it's not exactly the cost of a single EasyJet fare to get a body back internationally.  More like £5k IIRC so they have to check.
 
So hope it all starts falling into place soon, neither you or your nephew need this grief
