You lot would find them an amusing read. It's a good series. Quite clever.
Still none the wiser about 'Footnote Phones'.

Footernote phones actually. They allow people to discuss things without interfering with the flow of the plot. For example, threads could stay on topic.

Read the books, it is explained better.
