Another sad death
« on: November 19, 2007, 07:36:19 PM »
LONDON (Reuters) -
Quote
Former Great Britain rugby league captain Mike Gregory has died aged 43 after a battle with a form of Motor Neurone Disease, his former club Warrington Wolves said on Monday.

Gregory, who played for Warrington for 12 years and led Britain to a series win over New Zealand in 1990, had suffered from the debilitating progressive muscular atrophy for three years.

He believed the little-understood condition had been triggered by a tic bite he suffered in Australia in 2003.

"I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Mike's death and my thoughts go out to his family and friends," chairman Doug Hoyle told Warrington's Web site (www.warringtonwolves.org).

"Mike served our club with distinction as a player for 12 years, including captaining Warrington in their last Challenge Cup Final appearance in 1990.

"Mike's brave battle against illness and his efforts to raise awareness of progressive muscular atrophy has been an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed, particularly by all his friends here at Warrington Wolves."

After ending his playing career, Gregory became an assistant at St Helens, winning the inaugural Super League title and two Challenge Cup finals.

He took over at Swinton before moving to his home-town club Wigan as an assistant coach, taking the top job in 2003.

He guided Wigan to the Challenge Cup final that year but it was to prove his final match in charge.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I'm beginning to think that perhaps we need part of the forum to be dedicated as a cemetary.  eeek:
