I thought the pitch was in a terrible state too – doesn’t Wembley have a roof?  noooo:

the state of the pitch was down to the fact that they played American Football on it a couple of weeks ago

I must admit I laughed when the first goal went in, luckily like Unc I had money on Croatia.

I feel sorry for Becks because he changed the game second half and it now looks like he'll not make the 100 caps.

Gerards passing was atrocious and I never even realised Lampard was playing until he stepped up for the penalty.

Summary from a soccer non-fan.

1) I thought the Croatians were probably better at playing on a potato field ~ 'praps they are used to it back home.
2) Lampard and Gerrard cannot play in the same position and neither is much good anywhere else so ended up, as so often, negating one another by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
3) Crouch did his best but he really isn't "World Class" is he? ~ bit of a one trick pony
4) Beckham made the difference in the second half but probably didn't have the fitness for the full 90. He did impress with his specialties (Passing and set piece kicks) and by popping up defending like a good 'un when needed.
5) It becomes ever more obvious that the English game is suffering from having too many foreign players playing in the Premier League (and the home grown players do not seem to learn from their club mates).
6) The Manager (Coach ~ whatever) got his tactics all wrong from the kick off and the Captain did not have the ability (lack of knowledge, respect of his teammates, authority?) to change things on the pitch ... which to my mind is what a Captain is there for ~ not just to exchange flags with his opposite number and then do sod all for 90 minutes.

Anyway at least I won't feel obliged to watch them again during the summer months of 2008.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.
