Strangely enough I agree with both Mort and Snoopy on this one. This story does once again show just how ridiculous organised religion is but at the same time, knowing that you are going to be teaching in an islamic country, any normal sensible person would make sure that they didnt do anything stupid to insult the locals especially given recent events.
