Hyphen-fest
« on: December 02, 2007, 07:00:57 PM »
I spent a long time yesterday installing some new software and prepping dinner at the same time - Yes, we can multi-task if we so choose  8). Note the use of the hyphen there.

Whilst the installation was taking place there was an on-screen rolling show of various attributes in which I was soon to be wallowing. I've never seen so many hyphenated phrases and rather than keep you in-the-dark, I thought I'd share them; I know you'll feel better for the experience. cloud9:
I was going to try and construct a sentence with all-included but frankly, life's-too-short, so enjoy...

end-to-end
in-depth
easy-to-use
web-ready
all-new
cross-application
double-click
non-watermarked
high-resolution
context-sensitive
project-based
re-use
toll-free
cross-product

I imagine if the promo-patter was actually live and in-person it would be accompanied by arm-gesturing quotation marks. Now that would be fun  ::)

All the pictures that were displayed along with each scrolling-page showed young, hip-and-trendy creatives until it came to the online tutorial when the picture was that of a frowning, grey-haired woman. You fvcking-ageist-bunch-of-tossers...  cussing:

I am clearly under-using-the-hyphen and will henceforth amend my ways... NOT!  evil: evil:

"Make me one with everything"

I tend to use ~ to join phrases. The ~ has a name which I cannot recall but I am confident Nick will tell me before I can look it up ~ in Fowler. I realise that I probably overuse ~ and sometimes resort to ......... in order not to appear boring but it is a silly habit ~ tho' it helps the narative to flow as it would in speech.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Almost right Nick - it is in fact a tilde, not to be confused with tilda, which is a make/producer/packager/seller of rice!

It's not a word I have ever written down before. Why would one need to?

To say that one places a tilde above an n in spanish in order to produce a different sound.
