(Although I do find their purple shirts rather fetching...) - contention rates simply is how many people using the same cable as you are using it at the same time. So, if you are meant to have 8MB and you are the only one in your vicinity using it, then you should get 8MB. If seven others are using it, then you will probably be down to about 1MB.
