Over run of the engineering work
« on: January 02, 2008, 02:15:03 PM »
I arrived at the station this morning to find that the reopening of Liverpool Street station hadn't happened as promised. It had been closed over the holiday period for major engineering work which has over run. The same has happened on the West Coast route.

I got to work about 45 minutes later than expected, others in the office had even longer delays. At the moment the station is still shut although a limited service is expected to start later this afternoon. So I'm certain to get home late and the train will be packed. To cap it all the fares have been increased today.

As these sort of works always seem to over run perhaps the planners should set more realistic goals and stop being so optimistic about how much work can be got through in a given period.

Network Rail has apologised so I guess that's all right then  ::)

Of course it's alright, they are going to have an enquiry!

'Twas on the news yesterday afternoon, last night and again this morning ~ Had you listened in you would have had prior warning.

Virgin Rail CEO was on "Today" this morning saying he was not interested in Network Rail being fined he simply wanted a reliable flow of information and realistic projections of deadlines that he could work to ~ which I thought was the first bit of constructive comment I'd heard.

From One Railway's website:

Quote
Until very late last night we were informed by Network Rail that the work was running on time

so if you heard it on yesterday afternoon's news someone is telling porkies.

Anyway even with prior warning I've still got to get in to the office and the work should have been completed as scheduled. Heads should roll but I doubt that they will.

The "Travel Totty" was going on about it yesterday ~ She and the DJ were even joking that she had so little to say as there was no traffic news that she had to keep mentioning the railway hold-ups.

So yesterday afternoon she specifically said that Liverpool Street station wouldn't be open this morning?

That means either Network Rail lied to One or that One has lied to us.

Bastards!

Certainly left me with that impression anyway. Not that I took too much notice as I had no travel plans and anyway would not come into London that way ~ well not from here anyway. There was certainly much chatter about closed stations, overruns of engineering work and L.St. did get named as well as Rugby.
A Google search only has today's announcements which frankly do not inspire much confidence about tomorrow either.

I went past our local railway station this morning and was gobsmacked to see the queue of people waiting to buy tickets coming out of the door and halfway down the street. The faces of impatience was a joy to behold.

Some things are just so predictable i.e that none of the automated ticket machines will work and that none of the lazy so and so's would have gone to the station  the day before to renew their ticket and hence save themselves from missing at least 3 trains whilst waiting in the rain  lol:

"Travel Totty" . . . . . .hold-ups.

I think those are a very unattractive alternative to proper stockings and suspenders.

Don't worry, even if they do finally fix them, the snow tomorrow will make them inoperable anyway.

It is also proving troublesome to find petrol in the Sutton area. Is this just a local thing?

No problem here with Petrol (99.9 per litre BTW) .... the trains seem to be running and even Snowdon (which I can see from my window) has no snow on the top.
So both cars are full, the heating oil tank has 1500 litres in it, the log shed is still half full and all is well cloud9:

I had problems the Saturday before Christmas. The local BP had no petrol at all and I noticed that Sainsburys had no diesel.  rubschin:
