I'm fed up
« on: January 25, 2008, 11:24:00 AM »
With paying someone to crawl around my study, trying to fix my PC so he is going to take it away for a few days. I shall be operating on a strange Lap-top for the duration so if I vanish do not fret. I shall be back  eveilgrin:

Meanwhile he will hopefully install Linux as well.

At the moment and given that I can buy nothing that isn't pre-loaded with Vi$ta this seems to be the cheapest option (actually funds are a little depleted as it seems that no invoices have been sent out for several months  evil:)

Systems are going to be changed on all fronts to make the income gathering more efficient and the PC use more friendly and less liable to failure (Har! Har!)

Now where did I put that Lap-top charging cable?  rubschin:

Hopefully back on air this arfty.

Thing is what is one to do if one wishes to purchase a new laptop and doesn't have old windows discs laying about?

You could try that... The shop told me that I couldn't use my XP discs from an old machine but they worked fine - registered on-line and everything. It is legal in my case tho (he hastened to add) as the original XP machine now runs linux…  whistle:

If it's a new machine you nedd to be aware that you may not be able to get all the drivers for XP, some are only available for Vista, although XP does a pretty good job with most devices.

Get friendly with your IT bods at work, its amazing how helpful they can be in cases like this. As long as you have the serial number for your OEM version there shouldnt be a problem with installing from another set of disks.

Good point...

My new HP Compaq dx2300 has a sectionj on their website where you can download all the drivers for XP including the Intel chipset drivers...

We don't have IT bods.  noooo:

So all I would need is the discs and the serial number? I can get those easily!

Thats the theory anyway, I've never tried it myself but I cant see Microsoft adding in seperate code to each version of XP they produce in order to stop reinstallation from other disks.

You only need patience if you are reinstalling XP media centre edition after testing vista ultimate and scrapping it.  Banghead
