Because it looks neat in the window, all clocks and watches showing the same time. The hands are at an acceptable angle so that they can be viewed and it stops silly cvnts from saying "The one that's right".

Check out any jewellers window display. Digital watches are, by convention, normally displayed at 00.00 and not working or you get the same problem.

Perhaps I should add that back in 1970 when I managed the shop there were few battery operated watches around.  There were some 500 watches and 150 clocks on display. Can you imagine the problems if I'd had to strip the window every morning, reset and wind all the watches and clocks and then redress the window? No way would I have had the time (geddit?) to do that AND as the day progressed they would start to show various times .... OK perhaps only by a couple of minutes but ......

I was once told that it was ten past ten or ten to two because it looked like the watch/clock was smiling, but if it was twenty to four or twenty past eight, they looked sad. This was said to draw the customer in to buy a watch/clock. Absolute bollocks of course,but I bet somebody got paid to do a three year study into it  noooo:

Yup! I was told that tale too by my first manager in the trade ..... he also had a theory about it being the standard position to place your hands on a steering wheel. Believe whichever you like but anyone trained in the pre 1980s would always do it.

Ratners (remember them?) used to issue a weekly window plan to their managers and every Ratner window looked the same.... and all watches/clocks would be set at 10.10.

Gerald Ratner called into my shop and offered me a job once .... I said no thanks as I didn't like the idea of their insistence on all the windows being done to plan. The Ratner Bros used to drive round on Sundays checking that the shop windows were all dressed according to the plan..... And Gerald was right ... they did sell crap but then so did Samuels and Hinds.
