Err.. I assumed it was live, until about 1/100 th of a second after they poured in the molten metal.

An ant colony can have multiple entrances sometimes anything up to 30-40 feet apart depending on how large it is. There wouldn't have been any real way for him to tell the size beforehand and fire ants can be vicious little bastards under normal circumstances, if they were defending their home it wouldn't have ended well for the guy with the molten aluminium.
