I wonder if they do bacon too?
Funny you should mention that, one of the more deranged IT bods back when I was doing techie stuff for call centres had a recipe for 'caffeinated bacon' that for some reason stuck in my head.
You need:
A pork loin joint
2 litres of cold water
Half a cup of salt
Half a cup of mixed white and brown sugar
Three quarters of an ounce of pink curing salt.
2 heaped teaspoonfuls of dark treacle
3 level tablespoons of caffeine powder.
Method:
Boil the water and add the salt, sugar, caffeine powder and treacle/molasses.
Leave to cool then submerge the pork into the brine weighing it down to make sure it's submerged before covering it.
Leave it in a cool, dark place for 3-4 days.
Remove the pork from the brine, pat it dry and then thinly slice.
Apparently you need to be careful, as the outer slices may contain more caffeine than the central parts. If they taste bitter then there is more caffeine present.
He used to claim that a bacon bap made with that stuff was the only way to start the day and the perfect cure for a hangover...
