Every time I look at the monitor I can't help but wonder if the crew were shitting themselves every time the gun was fired in case that was the time it capsized them

If memory serves it was just a river and coastal vessel. Something tells me nobody would have been stupid/suicidal enough to take it out any further. Drachinifels YT channel has a fair amount of content about the monitor class.
