Colour me doubtful but Mrs. Google says it is true! 

It's not the craziest thing that America came up with back then. So far that award goes to the Davy Crockett 

Why?

It worked.  Did Russia invade Germany?  No.

There were a number of factors that prevented the Russians from invading Germany, not just the insane idea of a nuclear armed bazooka with a 1.5 mile range.

There were a number of factors that prevented the Russians from invading Germany, not just the insane idea of a nuclear armed bazooka with a 1.5 mile range.

In those days the West had stuff all non nuclear defence to potential massed fleets of Russian tanks and aircraft.  A 20 tons of TNT equivalent shell and similar AAM would definitely have made them think.
