1 officer 17 yobs, his actions sound reasonable to me.
« on: March 06, 2008, 09:34:33 AM »
Ok so you have a single police officer trying to break up a fight in a street between 17 tennage yobs before someone gets seriously hurt. I dont know about the reat of you but I think he acted reasonably and proffessionally.

Quote
A woman has dubbed the use of CS gas by a police officer to break up a school fight "extreme", after her daughter was caught up in the spray.
The officer used the gas, normally used for serious public order offences, after a disturbance outside Whitefield Fishponds Community School in Bristol.

The fight began between two teenage girls, with about 15 other people then joining in.

Avon and Somerset Police said the officer had no alternative.

The force said he used the gas to prevent serious injury to the group fighting in the street.

But Musnilya Babatunji said the spray affected her 15-year old daughter Jibuise.

She said: "I think it wasn't called for to go to those extremes, putting CS gas on school children."

Her daughter added: "I felt dizzy and my eyes were burning. I couldn't open them."

Jibuise said she and her friend, Sasha Wood, went to help another friend involved in the fight.

Another girl, Keyshia Wood, added: "The policeman came over and dragged us off and CS gassed us. My friends picked me up and took me into a shop.

"The fight wasn't even that bad. I don't know why he used it. It was horrible. I couldn't see and I panicked."

The school confirmed that two girls had been fighting in Fishponds Road and that teachers had called the police after others joined in.

'Nothing but praise'

The head said the school had taken action against the girls.

Avon and Somerset Police said: "It was essential the officer acted quickly to prevent serious injury to those involved and break up the serious disorder incident which was escalating in violence.

"The officer, who dealt with the incident single-handedly, acted in an entirely professional manner and no formal complaints have been made to police or the school following the incident.

"The police have received nothing but praise from staff at the school and local children who observed the incident."

A 17-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault at the scene was later released without charge.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

Shouldn't the teachers (note pural) have broken up the fight before it escalated?

I'd have been happier if the officer had cracked a few skulls with his baton as well. Bloody kids  evil:

Why do we not use water-cannon for crowd control in this country?

We have the ideal climate.

Normally I would agree that the teachers should have sorted it out. However, it did happen outside the school gates and as such the teachers have no authority and the kids would have known that.
