Clarke was only 1 of 2 science fiction writers I can think of who actually saw elements of their writing actually become real in their lifetime. The other one being Gene Roddenberry.

His were the first adult books i read as kid.  sad24:

'Rendezvous with Rama' was always my favourite. Morgan Freeman has been trying to get it filmed for years. Seems it will now happen but Clarke wont be able to atten the premier.  sad24:

And you had never read any Dickens, Shakespeare, Hardy, Lewis Carrol, Swift etc? How about Tom Brown's Schooldays or Tom Sawyer ................. all written by adults for adults.

I see. Thank you for the explanation ... not offence intended but I had read those that I mentioned by the time I was twelve, through choice. TBH and as I have said on this forum and in "the other place" I have never seen science fiction as particularly adult reading. My little boys (aged 9 and 7) love all that stuff. It simply has never appealed to me. I have tried but it does nothing for me at all.
Each to their own I guess ~ certainly not something to fall out over.
