David Mudd, 86

I met him a few times over the years, both while he was an MP and after he retired and always found him to be a genuine down to earth Cornishman with a great sense of humour.

Sadly he was replaced as MP by Seb Coe and the less said there the better (although I will admit I may have not made a good impression with him by asking how running really fast makes him suited to be an MP for a constituency he was parachuted in to).  noooo:

lol: lol: lol: Nice one!  Thumbs:

There is a photograph floating around somewhere of Coe shaking my hand over some event at college a couple of months later that was never used in the local paper. Given that friends described him as having a pained smile and me having a slightly evil one I can't think why.  whistle:

 Thumbs:

If you read Coe's autobiography you would see a good reason why Mudd likely gave up that constituency.  Same reason Coe did, no home life.  Commons hours then were gruelling and transport less than suitable

As for the man himself, knew nothing of him but seems to have been a good egg.  RIP
Well, whatever, nevermind

I'd say that was the reason that Mudd did but Coe didn't give up his constituency, he lost it in the 1997 election.

Don't feel too bad about it, it's easier to remember for those of us who lived here as it was a time of great celebration and optimism  lol:

I'm no fan of Coe (preferred Ovett by a mile) but that autobiography is well worth a read.  Might change your view of Coe, it did mine

He's an impressive athlete and a driven individual but he was a godwful choice to parachute into the constituency. He didn't know the people, didn't know the area and there was a far better local candidate who was well liked and respected who had been shoved aside so that Coe could have the seat. In all honesty I suspect that if Labour or MK had been able to field a more credible candidate than they did then the Conservatives would have lost the constituency.
