Ok, do yuo have the same version of XP on the laptop as you do on the desktop and is it hotfixed/Service Packed up to the same level?

If they are then its probably firewall settings.

I could suggest deactivating your firewall but that would invite calamity on the scale of Nick wandering around a firework factory with only a lighter to illuminate the way...  noooo:
