Symptoms of a hangover include a thumping head, dry mouth, muscle aches, vomiting and sweating.

Characteristically, though, the symptoms improve with time. The only prevention for a hangover is not to drink too much alcohol. However, since many of the symptoms are caused by dehydration induced by alcohol, replacing fluids is important.

A few studies have shown that isotonic sports drinks (which contain small particles of carbohydrate) are among the best ways to speed up recovery from hangovers. The small amounts of body salts (or electrolytes) that they contain enhance fluid absorption in the gut faster than water.
