There was a bloke in the woodwork class at my school (a subject at which I was utterly useless). One term we had to make a toast rack He asked if he could make a record rack instead and was told he couldn't. So he made a toast rack three feet long with space for about 60 pieces of toast!!
Woodwork classes... ahhh...
Apart from possessing a wooden leg (the joint of which he used to oil publicly from time to time
) our woodwork master was renowned for coming out with a classic phrase.
One boy had made a disastrous attempt at the current task thereby wasting good timber. The master scolded him for his ineptitude and wastefulness... finishing off with the words:
"Bloody 'ell, lad, wood don't grow on trees yer know!"
