Motivation (intrinsic not extrinsic)
« on: June 13, 2008, 01:40:48 PM »
Looking back over my "life" I realise that since leaving university I have changed jobs every 5 years.Boredom.

I stayed in one job for 7 years but the last 2 years were torture. I have been dong my present "job" for 11 years now and I am BORED BORED BORED but it seems too late to change (unless I go and drive a Shell tanker for over £40K a year + doughnuts).

How many of you lot really savour what you do and how many merely carry on to pay the rent and save (if you can) for escape?

Prior to enforced "retirement" I changed employers frequently for the same reasons as you and at about the same time scales (every five years). I felt, for many years, that the only reason for going to work today was ..... to be able to afford to go to work tomorrow.
"Retirement" has shown me how right I was.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Bring it on then!

I can't see retiring until about 2016!

I wonder if shelf stacking in Asda is an attractive option? (One could purloin rice, pasta and other luxury goods!)

Having guarded Tesco stores and warehouses for many years you would last about 48 hours if that was your plan. eveilgrin:

All the supermarkets have a simple policy ~ They always prosecute staff for theft.

I promise you there is no where in any of the stores or warehouses where you are not being watched.

I left employment 21 years ago and, according to the 'life plan', have 7 more years to go before I can put my feet up.
It was the best move I ever made and now with two different businesses it's covered a wide range of experience - including boredom but intrinsic motivation keeps kicking in. Having discussed this recession with a few others I'm convinced I'm unemployable so the extrinsic motivation kicks butt as well  evil:

But then I think we've discussed this before...

Probably unusually, I have to say that my 18 years here have not been - on balance - boring. A company of 300 or so is pretty good for moving quickly into new technologies, being the test-bed for the "bigger" company and generally having better opportunities to climb the ladder.

In passing, I would mention that a half decent Grammar School education probably helped, as you become "known" to the big bods pretty quickly when you can converse (be it via e-mail, or simply in conversation) in a manner that sets you apart.

I have been lucky. In fact, very lucky. I will miss the place terribly, but it is now time to move on and although nervous, I am also quite excited. Time to do what I want to do, rather than what is the safe option and pays the bills.
