Depends mainly on which "origins" story on Wiki you choose to believe however what is not in doubt is that Stromboli is an island just off the north coast of Sicily and that the sandwich is made with Italian bread, Italian cold meats and Italian Cheeses.
There was indeed an Ingmar Bergman film of the same name made in 1950.
