Perhaps Darwin will be the only other one here who remembers this practice. I cannot be sure whether the charity was to help starving Africans, for something like Barnardo's or even the NSPCC.
I knew of it but it was not the kind of thing my school would have encouraged.

They would more likely solicit large donations to build a church (Anglican) which would then be 'run' by one of the large number of useless former pupils who took up the cloth but failed to achieve seniority.  redface:

Don't be embarrassed ~ my school had the legend "The Alexander College for the Sons of Gentlefolk" engraved over the stone gateway ~ mind you by the time I got there it had morphed into Regent's Park Secondary School for Boys but the original boast remained across the vehicular entrance for many years.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

DS's comment sparks memories; we had two Ghanaians at school (60's), each from powerful, influential but opposing families. In other words when one's family was in power the other's was keeping a low profile. One once showed me a family photo; it was rather like the school photo with a hundred odd family members...
"That's my muthah, and tha's another one.. and there's another muthah..."
The family's vehicular transport seemed to consist of a host of American cars, sundry agricultural appliances and two London buses  eeek:

A posse of them once attended a school sports day; all I can remember is a flurry of tribal costume as the Ghanaians swooped down on the strawberry teas. They were uncommonly loud to boot.

Tonight's dinner is courgette & mushroom carbonara by the way  ;)

We are having the remains of yesterday's roast pork, diced with sweet n sour sauce and rice.
