I only know this because my mother's father was a cavalryman in both the 2nd Boer War and in WW1. He used to tell me about "Pig Sticking" when I was a nipper. Much to my mother's horror he had me doing it with a broom handle, some rubber "quoites"  whilst riding my bicycle full pelt down the garden path.

Rubber Quoites for those who don't remember.

I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I didn't know there was a second Boer War.

'Fraid so ~ Wiki, as ever gives the answer. Again I would not have know other than for my Grandfather stressing that his involvement was in the Second War.
Wiki Quote

Quote
First Boer War
Main article: First Boer War

The First Boer War (1880–1881), also known as the "Transvaal War," was a relatively brief conflict in which Boer settlers successfully resisted a British attempt to annex the Transvaal, and re-established an independent republic.

 Second Boer War
Main article: Second Boer War

The Second Boer War (1899–1902), by contrast, was a lengthy war - involving large numbers of troops from many British possessions - which ended with the conversion of the Boer republics into British colonies (with a promise of limited self-government). These colonies later formed part of the Union of South Africa. Unlike many colonial conflicts, the Boer War lasted three years and was very bloody. The British fought directly against the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The bloodshed that was seen during the war was alarming and many of the British soldiers faced unfit conditions. Inhumane treatment of South Africans and the usage of a new system, the concentration camp, caused many in Britain to view imperialism as barbaric. The cost of war in money, destruction, and demoralisation was gigantic, and many in Britain began to believe the Empire was too costly to maintain.

The weather here is nice as it can be
But it doesn't really matter much to me
Because the family have gone out to Rhyl for the day
To watch some people performing in an Air Display *

Whoa there! Just have a little drink and think about that lawn for a while. Now have another little drink.

Now work it out ~ if you poured a few little drinks onto the lawn it too would be half cut. whistle:
