And despite all the assurances that the law banning smoking in the workplace was only "to protect those who do not smoke from the selfish actions of those who do" some jobsworth has taken his brand new powers and misinterpreted them to slap a fixed penalty on some poor sod having a fag in his own van.

Laws allowing the confiscation of vehicles used in criminal acts are being used by North Wales police to seize and destroy vehicles where neighbours have complained that the drivers have caused "fear and alarm" by driving "recklessly". No actual offence has be committed and no criminal act has taken place but still the police "interpret" what Whitehall has said to suit their own ends.
No other country in Europe would permit this. Why do we?
