M40/A34 is no better.
In fact A34 through Newbury is the stuff of nightmares for me as I used to commute Southampton - Basingstoke. Then it became Enfield - Southampton every weekend. After that it was Ipswich - Gillingham (Dorset ~ close to Longleat) every other weekend for two and a half years. Trust me when I say I know those roads as well as JOM.

Newbury is a doddle since the bypass opened (and Newbury itself is a great place to go since it opened too)

rubschin: Oh yes ~ the infamous Newbury Bypass with Swampy and Co. Ruined miles of good countryside just to try to prove a point.
Sorry JOM but as a "local" I am still feel entitled to say that Newbury is a sh*thole. Always was, always will be.

I am not in favour of the M3 extention and the ruination of the downs around Winchester either, all to get yet more container traffic into Southampton and wreck the city completely.

All the more reason to have a bypass then.

Not at the cost of some very lovely and historic woodlands that can never be replaced and all to knock five minutes off a car journey.

I just called my sister.

"Are you near yet?"

I had to explain that we hadn't left yet  ::)

I take it she was not impressed. You really do need to explain to Mrs Nick that the rest of the country operates to British Summer Time, not, as she seems to think, British Sometime.

Even if you left right now you would not be in Winchester much before 9pm by whichever route you travel.

In your shoes I think I might well have told my sister that we would now be arriving tomorrow then sit back and wait for Mrs Nick to announce her readiness to depart before telling her that the car, with you and the Boy, will be leaving after breakfast in the morning whether she is in it or not.

Not at the cost of some very lovely and historic woodlands that can never be replaced and all to knock five minutes off a car journey.

This was in place for two days before it was noticed
