1977 ~ I was right in line with Bobby Stokes when he hit the F A Cup winning goal against Man U ..... I promise you he was at least 5 yards off side.

ah ha!

1976: the Cup Final year

Southampton faced Football League First Division Manchester United in the final. Stokes scored the only goal of the game, placing his shot accurately into the corner of the net past Alex Stepney in the United goal. Initial thoughts were that he was offside but replays show that he was not. The result remains Saints' highest success as a club. He won a new car for scoring the first goal in the cup final; he had apparently started taking driving lessons prior to the final, fully expecting to win the vehicle.

You're right it was 1976 ~ I just dug out me programme.  rubschin: Must be me age.

I still reckon he was off side but frankly it matters not ... we won the bloody thing and that was all that counted.

Did you know that we had also been runners-up twice?

Good winning answer in a pub quiz.
1900 beaten by Bury 4 - 0
1902 beaten by Sheffield United 2-1 in a replay

Then, of course, we were also-rans in 2003 when we were beaten by Arsenal 1- 0 in Cardiff (Wembley being out of commission at the time).

Well, they're definitely the Man U of the Championship at the moment.

Happily the Teenage Hormone Wreck AKA Me daughter supports Ipswich (she was by some freakish accident born there)

Their awful season gives me much pleasure.
