They had the leaf/leaves, thief/thieves series and then dwarf/dwarfs was in the "exceptions to the rule" section  noooo:

National Curriculum only sets the framework ~ the teachers decide how it is implemented in each lesson.
In this case the NC would say something about recognising "Word Families" (as they like to call them) and the teacher will have selected the words she would use to illustrate the point.

Whilst I personally object to the 600 plus pages of the National Curriculum (Compared to less than 30 pages in Sweden) as a principle, I object even more strongly to it being used as an excuse by poor teachers.

But your spelling is not at fault ~ you have simply used the wrong word. No spell checker known to man would have picked that up. I find this happens to me quite often, giving me paws to wonder is indeed my brain instructions to my fingers are being misunderstood or if the computer thinks it knows what I am writing and finishes the word for me. As a demonstration of right spelling/wrong word I know it should have been pause but the spell checker doesn't.
