A mysterious deposit
« on: September 30, 2008, 12:46:11 PM »
So I get a text message from my bank showing that £583.08 has gone into my account.

 rubschin:

So I call them to ask where it came from.

They didn't know.

 rubschin:

I think it's a mistake.

Can I keep it?

Interestingly I have just checked my online account and £583.08 has gone missing! I've called the bank and they don't know where!

Thank-you for clearing this up for me Nick! I'll pm you my address so you can write me a cheque!  cloud9:

I think the answer's no.   cry:

I had £3,000 odd turn up in my account tht I didn't know about. After investigation it turned out to due to my company. I had faxed bank account details over to a creditor but had put my bank account number instead of the firm's.

But I have alerted them and they are in the dark. So how long before they can ask for it back?

And you had accidentally sent him your own bank details , like  rubschin:

Same bank and branch, just different numbers. I know them both from memory.

No ~ Legally the obligation is on you. You know it is not your money. Keeping it would amount to theft.

Actually I do not believe that the bank are not able to trace the source of the deposit. Of course they can if they are pressed.
