We used to have one... played 78s and everything... sliding doors on the front and the smell of the wood and valves... 

Ohhhh Snoops! Beautiful. We had one back in the 60's. Absolutely adorable. I used to sit right in front of it listening to the new stereo sound on the Beatles L.P's. Heavenly memories, aghhh.

  Could be the belt drive is worn or the belt stretched. On the other hand and to be totally politically incorrect the little black boy, that my dad said was inside to push the records round, has died of old age.

The rubber has gone brittle on the idler wheel thingy off the motor. It is not important as records are never played in these CD days.

BTW, I removed the turntable assembly, disconnected and reconnected all the wires myself without calling in an electrician. 

It looked very like an electric hob underneath. . .
