He doesnt get quite as angry on this one.

My problem is trying to control what my mother buys my daughter.......she thinks she is going to get her a laptop for a combined birthday / crimbo present. I have said categorically no - she then says she can do what she wishes it is her grandaughter blah blah blah.

I have kindly explained I already have to spray her in WD40 to get her off MSN / Bebo et al but at least I have some control in that the PC is downstairs.

So my next plan is if she does disobey me she can give her the bloody laptop but there is no way in hell I am going to set up the internet connection on it  point:

It's a slippery slope Miss D.

First she'll persuade you that the the internet is needed for homework then...

Simple to you or I ~ but you'll be using the PC, in comes daughter, "must do homework now" throws hissy fit, hogs PC all evening.

Eventually you decide to go the easier route and install the internet on laptop.

On the other hand if you do have a rush of blood to the head and install t'internet on her laptop you should still be able to block access to those sites so she can only use them when she is downstairs.  whistle:

An alternative plan ~ invite mother to visit, show her porn sites and this place, open her eyes to the dangers of the internet and ask, very sweetly, if this is really what she wants her grandchild exposed to because that is what her selfish attitude is leading to eveilgrin:

Remember there is more than one way to skin a cat.

And despite what both children and schools argue there is NO HOMEWORK that cannot be done with a library book, pen and paper.

Further to my comment re homework. The Teenage Hormone Wreck has had her own Lap-top and printer for a couple of years.
Last week she was both "heartbroken" and incensed to have ALL of her English and History course work returned to her by the two respective teachers as unacceptable because she had done it on her lap-top and it was not handwritten.

Much weeping and gnashing of teeth, shouts of "UNFAIR" rang through the land and I said ... "I told you so but you wouldn't listen ~ as always you knew best ~ now shut up and start writing" whistle:

I.T. is the only subject that demands computer useage. For other subjects it is handy but most teachers and ALL examination boards say that too much reliance on computers endangers genuine original work by the student and suggests that they are taking "the easy route and copying work".
Despite T Bliar's promise that every child will have a computer a great many do not. Access to school computers at the THW's school has to be booked 14 days in advance and preference is given to those doing IT at GCSE level. It is therefore impossible for teachers to expect homework/coursework to be done on a computer and they want everyone to be playing at the same level in order that the teachers may grade work properly ~ so paper and pen it is and will remain so for a long time yet.

I've had the same discussion with my children when they say they have to do their homework on the computer.

There is no way a school can insist that work has to done on the computer simply because it cannot guarantee that every child has access at home.

Having said that, computers are a great boon to doing homework.
