Advance party from Planet X I reckon.
Sussing out the lay of the land, and deciding where the best place is to set up their colony after we've all been wiped out.

I always rather liked that film. In fact I have it in my collection.

One wonders if the screen writers had read 'Childhoods End' by Arthur C. Clarke for the inspiration for the the beginning. Still, no doubt he stole the idea from someone else anyway. The bastard. lol:

As far as I can tell Arthur C. Clarke was the first to use that image.  Been nicked loads of time since.

Back in the 80's there was this little known Sci Fi series called V, looking at that its pretty clear where a lot of the initial inspiration came from.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

Indeed. 'V' ran from 1984-5, Childhoods End was published 1953.

'V' is about to make a return it seems :

If they do as good a job with this reimage as they Battlestar Galactica team have then it will be well worth looking at.

I've got he miniseries and the second part of V on DVD. There was another series after that but I dont think it was ever released on DVD.
