Went to watch my dad on parade yesterday, at Carshalton. Pretty big turn-out.

Was surprised how many ex-service people I knew or recognised.

Nice tot of rum afterwards. smile:

My boys paraded ~ one with the Cubs and the younger with the Beavers. Army band and Brit Legion and all. They were very proud of themselves ~ if soaked to the skin.

Thank-you. I was hoping for a tried and tested route rather than a google search.

WW1 - try here

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

Found my grandfathers stuff.

For later wars/conflicts or general service, you may find some useful stuff here, otherwise it's a personal visit to Kew.

Nick's list is not as helpful as he may think. There are strict rules on Army records from 2nd WW
Much depends how they were related to you and when they served in the Army. First world war is easy if you know the regiment and service number (unless the surname is very unusual) Second WW can only be done via MOD records and you have to be next of kin/sole surviving relative (and able to prove it) before they will release info ~ either that or wait another 30 years.

It is for Mr Wench and his Mum. The two of them have decided that it would be nice to know more about Grandad/Father and his WW2 career. They aren't on speaking terms with his widow and so don't really have access to anything that he may have left and were trying to work out how it would be best to go about it. I told them it would be an MOD job and they didn't believe me.
