John Pearse, the guitarist and folk singer who has died aged 69, wrote and presented an original series of televised guitar lessons for the BBC called Hold Down a Chord. Made in black-and-white, the series began in 1965 and taught many aspiring guitarists to play by the book – covering scales, tablature notation, finger-picking, vibrato and other refinements – at a time when the three-chord pop music boom was at its height.
