No. Not Woolies!
« on: November 19, 2008, 01:35:41 PM »
High street business Woolworths confirmed it is in talks over the possible sale of its retail business.

While the company did not identify the suitor, the Times newspaper said Woolies was in discussions with Hilco, the retail turnaround specialist, about the sale of the high street business for £1.

Woolies recently rejected a proposal from Iceland retail founder Malcolm Walker.

The retailer, which has been a presence on UK high streets for nearly 100 years, has more than 800 stores but has been battered by competition from supermarkets and internet retailers.

Another great British institution disappearing? sad32:

I bet Wenchy loved them too. The original shop of top quality tat. Tat heaven in fact. cloud9:

Used to say they sold nothing over sixpence (old money). Saucepan cost sixpence and the lid cost sixpence.

Mind there is hope ~ they have changed hands several times over the years ~ but still the seem to plug on. They have shut a number of shops in this area over the last two years.

Do you remember the days when almost every Woolies was next door to a Timothy Whites? I often wondered how that came about.

Yuk - don't like them . They are called white gems - or were - probably not allowed to call them that now

Agreed,  sick2: All white chocolate is sickly in my opinion, the darker the better for me.

I was thinking of milk chocolate, but in essence the same thing.

Brown Gems perhaps?

That sounds a bit Barrymore though. . .
