Ceramic Hob
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:59:08 PM »
Well, I've taken the plunge and bought a new ceramic hob to replace the old solid hotplate hob. Armed with BM's money off voucher (!) and with a store discount coupled with reclaiming the value added bit, it came in at a decent price. Now, should I spoil the ship for a ha'peth of tar and try to install it myself?  rubschin:
I'm not averse to a bit of DIYery but in my experience there's always a learning curve and I've never done this one. Online research tells me virtually nothing about installing one let alone removing the existing unit, but there's about 12 pages of discussion on a technicians forum concerning the legality, compliance, safety testing issues etc so methinks it might be wiser in the long run to get Jimbo Sparks along and pay him to do it.

Well?   Should I or shouldn't I?

I'm leaning that way Wenchy, but it would of course make the thread a lot shorter  ;)

Of course without a qualified Electrician's signature on the certificate saying that he has inspected the installation any warranty would be invalid as would your insurance if it goes up in smoke. Qualified Sparks does not HAVE to fit it but he does need to sign the job off and he'll charge the same for that as to fit the bloody thing
Get a man in and take no notice of (i) Expats to whom the rules don't apply and (ii) Farmers who will lash anything up with baler twine and call it a "Job well done".

That's why I'm leaning towards Jimbo Sparks.  The other thing, which is quite important, is that having done a reccy of the job I think the whole oven (beneath) will have to come out first in order to get at the fixings and connectors. That alone I'm quite happpy for Jimbo and Jimbo Jnr to do.
