Which laptop?
« on: December 08, 2008, 09:39:18 AM »
I know virtually zilch about laptops, but have decided to buy a couple for Growlers jnr. so they can do all their course work without hogging this thing all night long.
Too cold in here for them anyway....as i like it.

What should I be looking for, and where from?
Nowt flash or expensive, but capable of this 'wireless' internet thingy which is something else I know absolutely nowt about. confused:

It does sort of depend what you want to spend and what you want them to use it for. For instance are they likely to want to play memory hogging games? Or is it literally just homework and some net surfing?

Mainly homework and net surfing. Mini Moose has to download pictures and stuff for her art and needleworky course work, and I daresay to talk the usual teenage shite with her mates on that wretched MSN thing.
Growler jnr will also be doing some coursework, writing essays, a few non violent games and also for web surfing to consatantly update his cyber space car dealership. ::)

It is an Asus Eee
Your children will think it's the mutt's nuts until they discover that it has limited memory, is useless for games, music downloads etc. Picture storage takes up huge amounts of memory by comparison with  what an Asus has.
I use it as a notebook and download everything to a memory stick thence to the main PC. If not it will be overfull and useless within weeks (if not days ~ knowing children). Also it works on Linux not Windows and as my daughter found out the school systems that they want to get involved with do not like Linux. Not what you are looking for at all. That said I think it is brilliant as a very portable notebook.
But then so is

This is what I have

But I also have a mahoosive HP desk top to back it up.

For picture/music storage I am thinking about picking up an external hard drive that we would share.

I'm non the wiser now. confused:

Mrs Growler has gone to Chester to see some man in a little independent computer shop for advice.
Told her catergorically NOT to go into PC Werld as she originally suggested, as they will no doubt try and stitch us up with some shite they can't shift onto anyone other than numpties. ::)

PC World is fine so long as you don't go to them for advice. I'm quite happy to go and buy stuff there but I do my research previously.
