Cutting Bread

Is there a simple device that allows you to cut a slice of bread evenly ...apart from industrial type machines ?

What is it about a fresh loaf of bread that means that when you put a knife in it you either get a wedgey slab or a crumbling wafer thin slice.

I know I am deficient in the bread slicing gene but surely there is a technique to make this easier  cry:

Few wimmin of my acquaintance have ever been able to slice bread ~ except my Grandmother who had trained as a kitchen maid back in the early 1900s and could cut a standard loaf, even freshly made, so thinly you could see through it.

For most others I would suggest

I can slice bread evenly ~ it requires a sharp knife, a keen eye and a steady hand. Let the knife do the work ~ any pressure and you will distort the soft middle of the loaf sending you off into wedge territory. Perhaps that helps.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

BM doesnt have DT's Darwin, his hands shake because of all those times he's landed on his head after falling off a roof.  whistle:
