The Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society is being closed down by Lloyds TSB with the loss of 3,000+ jobs (The 3,000 was the figure given by the BBC news)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jun/09/lloyds-cheltenham-gloucester-close

ALSO
Thomas Cook may be going Tits up!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8091298.stm
This looks nasty for some 70,000 employees world wide! Thos Cook claims it will not bother them as they are "ring-fenced" but I thiink we have heard that sort of tale before ~ Northern Rock springs to mind to name but one.

Yesterday, they were reporting that Setanta are believed to be in trouble. They are refusing to accept new customers. It is reported that they owe Scottish football clubs £3 million, and they are due to pay the English FA £20 million next week. I think FA is coming the FA's way

The end of the year doesn't appear to have been kind to the retail sector

Priceless and Barratt's shoes (3840 jobs)
Hawkins bazaar (400 jobs)
D2 jeans (200+jobs)

Also, teetering on the edge are:
Blacks leisure (3500 jobs)
Hmv (have hundreds of stores, must be a few thousand work there)
Past Times (1000 jobs)
La Senza (3600 jobs)

2012 isn't going to get off to a good start for many many people  noooo:

Ferry firm SeaFrance has been officially liquidated by a French court and told to cease activity, with the loss of 130 jobs in the UK.

Pity ~ I preferred them to P&O .... much better food.
