And can you record onto Blue Ray?
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Can you play normal dvds on a blue-ray player?
Not only that but it 'upscales' them to HD!  cloud9:

Cool, next time the dvd player breaks it would make sense to upgrade then.

But does it record and does it not also require an expensive upgrade to HD capable TV as well?
No point in playing HD Blueray if the fvcking TV can't cope with it.

You can already get Blu-Ray DVD writers for your PC at a reasonable cost and recorders for under your telly will be available soon...

You'll see a noticeable improvement in quality even on a standard resolution TV and as Wenchy says, it would be pointless to buy an old DVD player if your current one packs up.

DVD Player £23 (ASDA)
DVD Recorder £49 (Internet purchase)
Blue Ray Player anything from £179 to £795 (Google search)

For the moment no contest IMHO.
For the future I think I shall wait until the next generation of technology is settled in and leave the current problems to those who like beta-tasting.

One LAST thought ~ are the Blue Ray Films you are watching and programmes you are recording through your PC any different to those I already have on Video and DVD? I accept that they may look and even sound better but are they not still the same old crap that is on TV night after night? What I am asking is are you watching a remake of  "Von Ryan's Express" (for example) or the same old cliche ridden bollox that bears no resemblance to reality?

::)

You'll remember that VHS players were dirt cheap when DVD came out... same thing. It may have been 'no contest' to buy a VHS player for £50 when DVD players were £179 but with hindsight it would have been money wasted.

BTW I bought my Sony player for £142 just before Xmas and it came with a number of free films.

As I mentioned earlier, it isn't 'beta testing' the HD format war is over and Blu-Ray is the clear winner.

I suspect you don't have WALL-E on video and DVD, nor Hancock, Mama Mia, etc.  ::) All the new releases will be on Blu Ray and the back catalogue of old movies is already huge. I bought Zulu for instance as the effect in HD is supposedly staggeringly good.

Children are watching Mama Mia on DVD as I type ~ one of many gifts received over the festive season from their Grandmother.

Put it down to a generation thing ~ I don't intend to spend money I don't need to spend just to be able to watch a film I do not want to watch anyway. I'm sorry but such "Technology" is only the latest development and WILL be superceded in the not very distant future.

Remember Raymond Baxter showing us CDs, scratching them with a pen knife, drawing on them with a biro and even running a tractor over one and it still played? Well that proved to be a load of bollox too because DVDs and CDs are not able to be stored permanently ~ they do degrade in quality and the data can and is being lost.

rubschin:

The point is that TV has just made its first major change in forty years...? From 625 lines to 1080 lines which you can get via digital transmission or on a disc. Blue Ray is the format which provides this new resolution on disc.

HD is not going to be replaced in the near future...  noooo:

You used CD as an example but I think you'll find they are still with us...  whistle:

Yes they are still with us but recent reports have said that data stored on early CDs is now degrading and that the method of storage is not everlasting as it was thought. They would not, for example, still be readable in 100 years time but documents written 500 plus years ago with pen and ink are. Some sources say that data stored on CDs will be unreadable in less than 50 years. As for CDs/DVDs being indestructible ~ well we all know that is bollox. A mere fingerprint can distort the sound on a CD. Meanwhile my Vinyls and even early records are still going strong after more than 50 years ~ in some cases 60 years plus.

Anyway ~ like I said it doesn't matter 'cos I ain't in the market for BlueRay or any other form of DVD player.

Please yourself how you want to spend your money ~ WALL-E? Is it PG or do you need an adult with you to watch it?
